“The National Basketball Association (NBA) today named SUGA as their NBA Brand Ambassador. SUGA is a member of the 7-member supergroup BTS and has the role of rapper, composer and even producer, both internally and also for other artists. As one of his first acts as an ambassador, SUGA will collaborate with NBA to promote his solo album D-DAY, which will be released on April 21 under the name Agust D. The sports organization will “collaborate around select concerts in celebration” of the new endeavor, according to a release. In a short video shared by NBA, SUGA said,
“Hi, I am Suga of BTS,” he said while holding a Wilson-branded basketball in his lap. “I am proud to announce that I’ve become an NBA Ambassador. It is personally a great honor as I have loved basketball since I was young. Stay tuned for more to come with the NBA!” SUGA
SUGA has been to two basketball matches so far, he watched the match when the Warriors played in China, where he met the legendary Stephen Curry, and recently he watched the game in Los Angeles.
“We’re thrilled to join forces with SUGA – a superstar musician, fashion icon, and passionate NBA fan. We look forward to working with SUGA to bring the same excitement he engenders from his global fanbase in support of our continued efforts to grow our brand.” NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league in Northern America composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada and is considered the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world.
According to ‘career trend,’ “An NBA team ambassador is typically a former player that had a strong fan base during his days on the basketball court. Some level of fame, especially in the home city of the team, and an ability to work with both corporate and grassroots fans are required skills. This role is ceremonial and is awarded to an individual that cares about the advancement of the particular NBA team.”
SUGA is an artist who has never played at any level in professional basketball, but he has been named their ambassador. This is very fitting as SUGA has always been an avid fan of basketball and his name is even coined with a basketball background, SUGA (Shooting Guard), shooting guard was his favorite position as he played basketball in high school and even played in Idol Championships when BTS used to attend ISAC (Idols, Olympic like games and competition)
NBA has a global social responsibility program, NBA Cares, that is responsible for the league’s stated mission of addressing important social issues worldwide.
